White Linen Night in The Heights Introduces Pink Street

On August 6th revelers who hit the streets for the 5th Annual White Linen Night in The Heights will be wearing white but will be encouraged to “Think Pink”. The annual sultry celebration of art, community and all things Heights that draws 40,000+ to the streets of the bohemian suburb will promote breast cancer awareness this year. Houston, Art & Culture, the organizers of White Linen Night in The Heights, have partnered with the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas (BHCT) to create Pink Street, which will host various grass-roots and better-known awareness and survivor groups.Members of BHCT and Houston Art and Culture

The inaugural Pink Street is planned to reside on White Oak between Oxford and Columbia. Along this stretch of the neighborhood members of the BHCT will host booths offering all sorts of games, attractions and giveaways, all touting awareness and prevention. Visitors to the street will be encouraged to think pink with pink lemonade, pink tattoos, pink balloons and performances on the pink stage including Runaway Sun who will headline the evening. Survivor and Supporter groups from throughout the Houston area will parade on Pink Street including the Harley’s Angels pink Harley riders, the Pink Phuree Dragon Boat Racing Team, survivor-themed art cars, and more.

In keeping with the artistic spirit of White Linen Night in The Heights, Pink Street will host a juried art tent and reception. This show will feature works from breast cancer survivors as well as celebrated local artists. Proceeds from the sales in the tent will benefit the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas. Also at the show patrons will be given the opportunity to put their own creation on one of the BHCT Pink Ribbons from the BHCT’s Pink Ribbon Parade which will be on display on Pink Street.

Mitch Cohen, Event Coordinator for White Linen Night in The Heights and CEO of Houston Art & Culture, said the partnership between the two groups was a no-brainer.  He went on to say, “The tradition of White Linen Night brings thousands of Houstonians to our neighborhood to experience the art, culture and cool community of The Heights. Why not capitalize on that audience and use the opportunity to promote Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention at the same time?” Cohen hopes the partnership will encourage women to get screened and educate a whole new audience of potential volunteers and donors.

The Breast Health Collaborative of Texas is committed to uniting breast health advocates and providers to educate, advocate and leverage resources to improve access to care for all Texans. Many of the participating organizations are well known in the Houston area including: The Rose – Houston, The Pink Ribbons Project and The Young Survival Coalition.

White Linen Night Heights Returns with Juried Art Show, Wine and Unveiling of Pink Ribbon Parade

The white-hot sultry event of the summer returns August 6, 2011 as Houston Art and Culture presents White Linen Night in The Heights. This neighborhood celebration of art, culture and “citified” bohemia returns again for its 5th annual installment. The evening promises to be bigger and better than ever as organizers expand the staging areas, featured activities and participants.

Over 40,000 Houstonians descended on The Heights last year in their white-linen finest to shop, sip and stroll the neighborhood and celebrate its art community. With crowds expected to be well over 50,000 this year, organizers have focused on expanding the staging areas for the event activities to truly make it a neighborhood-wide celebration. In addition to the original 19th Street locale, many of the art, music, fashion and exhibition offerings will also be happening on White Oak in the heart of the neighborhood.

Visitors to this year’s event will once again be treated to a fun atmosphere including local artists, local musicians and local businesses in The Heights. Most participating businesses will host a local artist “in residence” for the evening, the First Saturday Arts Market will feature an expanded artist offering, and Houston Art and Culture will host a juried art tent. Last year’s successful White Linen Fashion Show will expand this year to include two staged shows, and local indie favorite Runaway Sun will headline the music line-up this year. Thirsty patrons this year will delight in the addition of Vinters Own, Houston’s Premiere Custom Wine Makers, to host wine tents and serve up their fabulous flavors made locally right in The Heights.

Recognizing the enormous attendance that this annual event boasts, the organizers of White Linen Night in The Heights have this year partnered with Breast Health Collaborative of Texas to help bring a large audience to Breast Cancer causes in the Houston area. This year WLNH will introduce “Pink Street” where local Breast Cancer groups will hold exhibitions and events aimed at encouraging people to become educated on Breast Cancer diagnosis and treatment. This tickled pink street will host groups on parade including the “Harley’s Angels” pink Harley riders, “Pink Phurree” dragon boat racing crew and more.

The anchor for Pink Street will be the unveiling of the Pink Ribbon Parade from The Rose of Houston. This fabulous celebration of artistic talent will pay homage to the now iconic pink ribbon symbol. Local Houston artists will create their visions on 9 foot pink ribbon sculptures and their works will be unveiled together for the first time at White Linen Night in The Heights.
